Lapidary Cutting Oil
A customer that does lapidary (rock cutting) wanted to know how the centrifuge would do on the lapidary saw coolant. So he sent me a sample and writes: "I'm interested in using your centrifuge to reclaim cutting oil used in a lapidary (rock) saw. Sludge contains approx. 60% particulate and viscosity runs from thin pancake batter to a thick chocolate pudding consistency. Is your unit compatible with such an operation?" He normally settles the oil but there is alway some loss. I am very happy to report that the cuttings drop out very quickly in the centrifuge, less than a minute. I'm not sure what the oil is but it appears to be about the consistency of mineral oil. Before centrifuging it is thick... and after the oil is clear and thin.
When the sample arrived it was the consistency of thin mud. The red is from the color of stone being cut. Definitely not clear. After less than a minute in the centrifuge the oil is clear and the stone cuttings are caked. The customer says his oil recovery from settling alone is less than 40%. This sample it appears the recovery is close to 65%. Also, the cake will remain a dry solid allowing easier disposal was solid waste rather than liquid waste.
